About this item:

  • This backpack is made for multiple days hiking or trekking in autonomy. You can carry everything you need to camp, drink and eat on your back with comfort.
  • The MT500 AIR only weighs 3.7 lbs and can contain a total volume of 50 liters which we recommend for a trip over 2 weeks long. The top of the bag is adjustable and can hold an extral 10 liters of volume.
  • This backpack has plenty of features if you are looking for a technical option at a fair price: AIR concept back ventilation, rain cover, water bottle holder, hiking poles holder, 8 pockets and a compartment for a water bladder for easy hydration.
  • The AIR concept: in order for your back to dry faster, we added a mesh on top of a ventilated structure. Ideal for long and sweaty day hikes from one camp to another!
  • This is a men's backpack: This bag has been conceived for a masculine morphology (torso and hips). We recommend to consider the users physical morphology when you choose a bag for comfort purposes when carrying it on your back.
  • 10-year warranty: the fabric of the bag is ultra resistant and Decathlon is proud to offer this warranty for any defect that could appear in the next 10 years.

Question:

What is the internal dimensions of the main compartment. Thank you

Answer:

The bag has a 60 L volume with an extra 10 L extension. The volume of each backpack is measured using a standardised method. we use small balls to fill the main compartment as well as each pocket. The balls are then emptied into a graduated container in order to determine the equivalent volume in litres, with a margin of error of just a few %. Bag dimensions when in use: Height : 70 cm / 28 in Width: 40cm / 16 inDepth: 35 Cm/14 inBack length (= distance 7th vertebrate - ilium)

Question:

What is the smallest load (in liters) it can carry securely / without looking baggy or flopping around?

Answer:

The MT500 AIR backpack has a capacity of 60 liters, with an extra 10-liter extension. While we recommend not exceeding 33 pounds for optimal performance, it's important to distribute the load properly to prevent it from looking loose or unstable. Based on the dimensions provided (Height: 28 inches, Width: 16 inches, Depth: 14 inches), packing heavier items closer to your back and clothing around them will help ensure a secure fit without the bag appearing baggy or flopping around. The adjustable back structure with mesh fabric also provides breathability and comfort during use.

Answer:

The MT500 AIR backpack has a capacity of 60 liters, with an extra 10-liter extension. While we recommend not exceeding 33 pounds for optimal performance, it's important to distribute the load properly to prevent it from looking loose or unstable.

Question:

Will this backpack be the correct fit for a taller person at 194cm with a long torso comfortably?

Answer:

This backpack should be a comfortable fit for a taller person with a long torso. The torso length is adjustable between 16 inches (40 cm) and 21 inches (53 cm), and the waistband adjusts from 31 inches (79 cm) to 54 inches (136 cm). Given these dimensions, it should accommodate your height of 194 cm comfortably.

Very good for getting started but remains quite heavy

Not bad for an introduction to the world of trekking. Nevertheless, its weight remains substantial!

Water bag pocket

The place where the water bag is placed seems to be designed for a 1 litre bag, but when I choose a 2 litre or larger one I have to push it down very far to fit, which causes it to get stuck at the bottom.

Great backpack

I decided on the men's version because the women's version was too small for my needs. I ran the Fjällräven Classic Germany with it, 60 km in 3 days. I got on really well with the backpack. When adjusted correctly, it sat very well and distributed the 14 kg well. All in all, I would recommend buying it. The only thing that could be done is the other way round, so that you can tie it down from the front.

Hip pain

We bought 2 MT500Air bags in 60+10 and 45+10 at the beginning of the year. After a long use (22 days 680 kms), my wife and I noticed the same problem of pain/redness in the hips due to a problem with the padding or the design of the supporting structure (see photo). We tested different settings without success. This is an observation for an evolution of the product which is otherwise perfect.

Air design

As with the MT900 UL line, the MT500 AIR range has a ventilated back structure with mesh fabric (net fabric) that helps the back to breathe and dries quickly. Rigidity is guaranteed by a reinforced frame. The back is adjustable with a release strap that’s easy and quick to use.

Materials

Polyamide main fabric 210D RS (Ripstop = increased resistance to tears), reinforced bag base (420Dx330D RS)

Recommended carry weight

According to the project for which this backpack was designed, we recommend you don’t load it above 15 kg. Then you can benefit from all its features. Moreover, it’s not recommended to carry a load greater than 20-25% of your own weight and put too much pressure on your back.

How to pack a backpack?

Put your bedding at the bottom. Put heavy gear (tent, camp stove, food) near your back. Store your clothing around it. A groundsheet or tent can be placed under the flap or under the bag if there isn't room inside. Keep your waterproof jacket and fleece to hand. Place small items for daily use (sun cream, map, glasses etc.) in the pockets. The water bladder can be placed in the compartment provided down the back.

How to use the multi-use straps?

The new range of MT500 AIR and MT900 UL bags has two straps with open aluminium buckles (on the lower part of the bag). These straps let you hook on a tent or mattress under the bag or on the barrel. If not in use, these straps can be stored (by pushing them inside) in the hidden pocket intended for this or detached and used elsewhere with the lark's head knot buckle.

Complementary accessories

To make your MT500 AIR bag easier to use, check out our storage accessories, repair buckles or hanging straps.

Product testing

All our backpacks undergo field tests by users who are representative of our target market under similar conditions to those you will encounter. To test, assess and validate products, our mission test connects the product manager responsible for the product design with individuals independent to DECATHLON. This backpack was tested by trekkers for 5 weeks in the Canary Islands, the Pyrenees and the Mont Blanc mountain range.

Storage instructions

Store your bag in a dry, ventilated place away from direct light.
