Let’s face it, your down sleeping bag has seen some things — epic nights exposed under the stars, muddy campsites, greasy dinners around an ashy fire. Want your down sleeping bag to stay in top-notch condition for many more amazing adventures? Properly washing and storing your down sleeping bag will help it maintain its loft, insulation, and longevity. So let’s dive into how to give your sleeping bag a little TLC — and we’ll also look at which sleeping bags are our favorites!
How to wash your down sleeping bag
① Check the care label
Before washing your down sleeping bag, take a moment to read the manufacturer’s care instructions. Some sleeping bags may require special care or specific washing techniques.
② Find a front-loading washing machine
If the sleeping bag can handle machine washing, use a front-loading washing machine with a gentle cycle. Avoid using top-loading machines with agitators, since they might damage the delicate down insulation.
③ Pre-treat any stains
Spot-clean any stained or soiled areas using a soft brush or sponge, and a mild detergent diluted in water. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach that can damage the fabric or insulation.
④ Wash on “gentle”
Place the sleeping bag in the washing machine and add a small amount of mild detergent designed for down products. Wash the sleeping bag on a gentle cycle with cold water. The water should never be hotter than 30°C (86°F)!
⑤ Rinse thoroughly
Rinse the sleeping bag with clean water to remove any soap residue. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear.
⑥ Air-dry your sleeping bag
Lay it flat on a clean surface or hang it on a drying rack in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Gently fluff and shake the sleeping bag every so often to even out the down insulation.
Storing your down sleeping bag
① Make sure the sleeping bag is dry
Before storing your sleeping bag, make sure it’s completely dry to prevent mold or mildew. If it’s still moist, hang it outdoors or in a well-ventilated area for several hours.
② Loosen the compression straps
If your sleeping bag comes with compression straps or stuff sacks, loosen them so the down insulation can fully expand and maintain the sleeping bag’s loft.
③ Use a storage sack
Roll the sleeping bag into a large storage sack or cotton storage bag. Usually, the manufacturer provides one. Store the sleeping bag in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, direct sunlight, and extreme temperatures.
Pro tip: Avoid storing the sleeping bag in a compression sack for overly long periods. This might permanently smush the down insulation.
④ Fluff periodically
Gently fluff and shake the sleeping bag while in storage to prevent the down from clumping.
