If you’ve read our blog on Merino wool, you already know why serious outdoor enthusiasts love it for its exceptional softness, breathability, and odor-resistant properties. But how can your Merino clothes last way beyond your adventures? Let’s learn about the proper care and maintenance of Merino wool, so you can keep your favorite apparel fresh and clean.
① Read the care label
Do yourself a favor! Before washing your Merino wool, take a moment to check the care label for specific instructions or recommendations from the manufacturer.
② Hand wash with a mild detergent
For best results, we recommend hand washing your Merino wool garments. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicate fabrics. Gently agitate the water to create suds, then submerge the garment, kneading gently to loosen dirt.
③ Rinse thoroughly
Once the Merino wool is dirt-free, rinse it thoroughly with clean water to remove soap residue. Don’t wring or twist the fabric! This can permanently stretch the fibers.
④ Press out excess water
Gently press your garment against the side of the sink or basin. Remember, don’t squeeze too hard or you’ll distort the wool’s texture.
⑤ Air-dry flat
Lay the garment flat on a clean towel or drying rack. Avoid hanging Merino wool to prevent its shape from stretching. Wait for the garment to dry completely before storing it or wearing it again.
Now you’re ready for whatever the trail throws at you! Once you’ve learned how to keep your Merino clothes in top-notch condition, you won’t be afraid to get a little dirty.
